The CyberMaryland Conference 2016

Cyber Maryland is always a superb event! I am looking forward to next Cyber Maryland in 2017. It was great to see so many friends, superb presentations, and cutting-edge technologies.

Maryland is recognized as a cybersecurity leader – nationally and internationally. The state has developed cybersecurity experts, education and training programs, technology, products, systems and infrastructure. With over 10 million cyber hacks a day resulting in an annual worldwide cost of over $100 billion, the United States is at risk.

Last year alone, tens of millions of Americans had their identities and their bank accounts threatened or compromised. Ensuring that our nation has the workforce, technology and resources to protect our citizens, businesses, infrastructure, intellectual property and more is of paramount importance. Maryland continues to be a leader on this front.

CYBERBIT – Defeating the Unknown
The cyber security market has been going through tremendous changes recently. Exponential increase in the number of attacks and their severity has caused a drastic decrease in the relevance and effectiveness of current generation security tools which are, by nature – signature based.
CYBERBIT confronts these challenges by protecting high risk, high value enterprises, critical infrastructures and governments against these advanced, signature-less threats.
We in CYBERBIT understand that in order to detect and respond fast and efficiently to advanced threats organizational security has to go through major changes. Detection and response cycles must become optimal and short, leveraging past knowledge and experience, automating processes and capabilities, and allowing the organization to be agile, alert and prompt.

The MILITARY NETWORK MODERNIZATION SYMPOSIUM was a superb event with many eye-opening presentations. CSFI was very proud to be able to Co-Sponsor this much-needed event with TTC on modernization of our military capabilities.

Major General Garrett Yee, USA, Lead, Network Modernization Military Deputy, Cybersecurity Directorate (CIO/G-6) identified the important triad of personnel – Readiness – Modernization and how the DoD CIO has approved the necessary budget for modernization effort. He mentioned that modernization could really not take place on legacy technologies. Cyber security must be baked into every Army product moving forward. The future of modernization lies on smaller teams who are more agile in cyberspace. Some of the initiatives would be alternate ways to authenticate to the DoD network without a CAC card. His presentation unquestionably gave the audience some strategic direction on what the Army is doing in order to modernize its networks.

Rear Admiral Danelle Barrett, USN, Deputy Dir., Current Operations, USCYBERCOM delivered a superb presentation on the role of USCYBERCOM covering National Mission Forces, Combat Mission Forces, and Cyber Protection Forces.

Command Objectives & Lines of Effort:

1- Ensure Department of Defense mission assurance

2- Deter or defeat strategic threats to US interests and infrastructure

3- Achieve Joint Force Commander objectives

Mr. Shannon Sullivan, Head of Federal, Google delivered a unique presentation covering Project Shield, Project Zero, Terra Bella, and Project Sunroof.

All presenters were fantastic! CSFI highly recommends TTC events as a source of actionable knowledge.

CSFI Trains and Certifies Spanish Cyber Forces – OCT 2016

ISDEFE and the Spanish Cyber Command become CCAs (Certified Collections Analyst). CSFI effectively deployed a six-day intense training in Madrid, Spain covering Cyberspace Operations Planning and Design along with Cyber Intelligence and Collections hands-on training/certification. The training was well received in Spain by dramatically enhancing the Spanish cyber operational capabilities. Such engagements can bring America closer to our NATO allies in cyberspace. CSFI would like to recognize the exceptionally warm hospitality provided by the Spaniards during this training effort.

Career Thoughts

I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to manage and run one of the biggest and most active forums on the Internet dealing with cyber warfare and cyber security – CSFI (The Cyber Security Forum Initiative). With over 16 years of cyber security experience, I continue to actively raise Cyber Warfare/Cyber Security awareness worldwide. I have worked as a Chief Security Engineer for AT&T, where I designed and approved secure networks for MSS. I have also consulted for several governments, military and private institutions on best network security practices throughout my career.

CSFI and its divisions CSFI-CWD (Cyber Warfare Division), CSFI-LPD (Law and Policy Division) and CSFI-WD (Wireless Division) continue to grow and expand with more than 60,000 information security members.

One of my personal goals is to serve our security community to the best of my abilities, in the protection and defense of our American national security interests, the American people, and that of our international partners. I am always ready to serve and to give of my time and skills to help our society with the growing problems we experience in cyberspace. I thank God and my family for the opportunities I have had in life and the most precious of all opportunities, which is the chance to serve others. I love what I do, and I appreciate all the support I have received from friends, family and our CSFI members.

Paul de Souza, CSFI Founder Director
