Biography for Jeffrey L. Caton (CSFI-CSSC Instructor)

Jeffrey L. Caton is the President of Kepler Strategies LLC in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, supporting the needs of government, business, and academe for cyberspace and aerospace expertise. In over 30 years of U.S. federal service (almost 28 years as an Air Force officer) he excelled in duties that included space and missile operations, joint operations and planning, engineering, test, and program management. Most recently, he was a faculty member of the U.S. Army War College for over 5 years, first as an instructor and Defense Transformation Chair in the college’s Department of Command, Leadership and Management and then as Associate Professor of Cyberspace Operations, supporting cyberspace curriculum development as well as research, publication, doctrine review, and lectures. Prior to this, his service included group command for ballistic missile development; squadron command for space operations training; joint staff work at Headquarters U.S. Space Command Operations Directorate; chief of the Strategy Branch at Headquarters U.S. European Command Planning Directorate; nuclear mission planning software development; and director of the Air Force’s foreign military sales portfolio.
Mr. Caton earned his master of art in strategic studies from the Air War College, his master of science in aeronautical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, and his bachelor of science in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia. His recent publications include the chapter, “On Cyberspace Theory,” in the U.S. Army War College Guide to National Security Issues, 5th edition as well as “Beyond Domains, Beyond Commons: Context and Theory of Conflict in Cyberspace” presented at the NATO 4th International Conference on Cyber Conflict in Tallinn, Estonia.

Career Thoughts

I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to manage and run one of the biggest and most active forums on the Internet dealing with cyber warfare and cyber security – CSFI (The Cyber Security Forum Initiative). With over 16 years of cyber security experience, I continue to actively raise Cyber Warfare/Cyber Security awareness worldwide. I have worked as a Chief Security Engineer for AT&T, where I designed and approved secure networks for MSS. I have also consulted for several governments, military and private institutions on best network security practices throughout my career.

CSFI and its divisions CSFI-CWD (Cyber Warfare Division), CSFI-LPD (Law and Policy Division) and CSFI-WD (Wireless Division) continue to grow and expand with more than 60,000 information security members.

One of my personal goals is to serve our security community to the best of my abilities, in the protection and defense of our American national security interests, the American people, and that of our international partners. I am always ready to serve and to give of my time and skills to help our society with the growing problems we experience in cyberspace. I thank God and my family for the opportunities I have had in life and the most precious of all opportunities, which is the chance to serve others. I love what I do, and I appreciate all the support I have received from friends, family and our CSFI members.
